A creative career spanning three decades
Sheldon Mendoza, also known professionally as Sir Flexalot, is a Trinidad and Tobago–born music video director and editor, portrait and graphic artist, and musician. His musical ability was discovered at the age of eight, when he began writing calypsoes and entering competitions at his primary school.
In the decades since, his career has spanned recording and performance, television and film production, visual art, and entrepreneurship — and, more recently, artificial intelligence and emerging media technology.
Singer, songwriter and steel pan player
In 1991, Mendoza began his professional music career as a singer/songwriter, performing on community and school tours throughout Trinidad & Tobago. He went on to enter the National Talent Competition “Nescafe Party Time,” earning recognition alongside Stacey Sobers for the reggae song “Sweet Woman.”
He is hailed as one of only three people to play the largest steel pan ever built, “The Jomoline.” As a steel pan player, he performed for years with the Boy Scouts and Longdenville Government Primary School, Chaguanas Senior Secondary School and Success Laventille Composite School at School Panorama competitions and steelband festivals, as well as at the national level with Claytones Steel Orchestra and Tropical Angel Harps.
As a music producer and recording engineer, Mendoza has worked with artists including Winston “Gypsy” Peters, Gary Cordner, Joey Rivers, Anthony “Tony Flava” Flaverney, Shawn “Sir Shawn” Mierez and Neil “Luckz” Lee Luck, and has helped develop the careers of young artists including Blazer, Silent Star, Stacey Sobers, Snakey, Supa Chile, Jungle and Marlon Asher.
As a performer, he has shared stages with many of Trinidad’s entertainers — including Sista Eurie, Sista Ron, General Grant, Kindred, Dreathren, King C, General E.T., Nasty X, Ghettorians and others — at venues including the National Stadium and the Queen’s Park Savannah. He has also performed alongside Jamaican reggae artist Cecile at the Dominica Creole Festival, in Malaysia at the opening ceremony of the Global Bio Herb Economic Forum, and has toured extensively across the United States.
During his recording career, Mendoza — under the names Sir Flexalot and Sir Sexalot — recorded more than fifty songs in Trinidad and the United States, many of which were never released. This included industry discussions involving his then-manager Niahal “Flipper” Hope, Clarel Roy, Creative Manager of BMG Music Group USA, and Ron “Amen Ra” Lawrence, a producer associated with P Diddy’s Hitmen production team. Notable collaborations include “The Girl Is Mine” with Trinidadian-born New Orleans reggae rapper UZI; “You Got To” with U.P. of Urban Product Dynasty in New Orleans; collaborations with Tre 8, Lil E and New Orleans rapper Red Dawn; and “Take Your Clothes Off,” produced by Greystone Productions in New York.
As an event promoter, Mendoza organized events showcasing local talent, including “Freedom Splash 95” at Gold Finger Spread Enterprise, Hip Hop and Reggae events at Club De La Soul in Chaguanas, and Soca shows at The Greens Montrose and Spectrum Port of Spain alongside Ancil “Knolly” Hunter and Porsche Promotions — featuring acts including American reggae band Skadanks with Rocker T and Puppy Rankin, and New York sound system Eruption Hi Power.
Directing and editing across genres and borders
As a music video director and editor, Mendoza has directed and edited videos for calypso, chutney, soca, reggae, hip hop and R&B artists locally and internationally. His work includes projects for Tallpree of Grenada (“Wicked Jab”), Winston “Gypsy” Peters (“Warmongers”), Gary Cordner (“Dance”), D Hitman featuring Fito Blanko of Panama (“Pretty Girls,” “More Rum for Me” and “Pelt Up Your Glass”), Peter Ram of Barbados (“Tattoo Farm”), the Reggae All Stars All Star Anthem, Kulaz of Australia (“The Way I Got It”), Windsor of Jamaica (“The Little Things You Do”), Mr. King featuring Norris Man of Jamaica (“Waiting to See”), RKG (“Cheatin Ting”) and many others.
He has also worked as a freelance producer and editor, producing, directing and editing television shows for Tempo Networks, and previously worked as an editor at Synergy TV. Mendoza has produced, directed, edited and hosted numerous television programs, and has also worked at Masala Radio 101.1 FM as a Technical Operator and Announcer.
Self-taught visual artist
A self-taught, multi-talented artist, Mendoza was responsible for the sculpted portrait of João Havelange at the Centre of Excellence and created much of the artwork on-site, including the football murals surrounding the stadium.
Building creative organizations
Mendoza has served as Youth Officer for the Longdenville Village Council and as the youngest Director on the Board of the Enterprise Life Centre of Servol, alongside the Caribbean Conference of Churches. His career continues to evolve through creative production, entrepreneurship and the development of new media platforms and technology ventures.
A career carried across borders
Mendoza has visited numerous countries including China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Korea, Hong Kong, the United States, the Bahamas, St. Kitts and Nevis, Antigua, Curaçao, Anguilla, Dominica, Saint Lucia, Sint Maarten and Suriname, among others — performing, producing and building relationships across the region and beyond.
